Robert Kubica condition: UPDATE

http://www.crash.net/f1/news/166449/1/robert_kubica_condition_update.html?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss

Lotus Renault GP has released an update regarding the injuries sustained by Robert Kubica following the Pole's accident on the Ronde di Andora Rally close to Genoa in Italy today
An update has been released on Robert Kubica's condition following his rallying crash in Italy this morning, with the Lotus Renault GP star having been diagnosed with multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand, his team has revealed in an official statement.

Following a high-speed accident less than five kilometres into the second edition of the Ronde di Andora Rally close to Genoa today (Sunday), Kubica was airlifted to the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure, where he has since undergone extensive medical checks and is currently undergoing surgery.

The greatest fear is for the Pole's hand, which has reportedly been crushed and risks requiring amputation. The other concern is that following an F3 accident back in 2003 that left him with a broken arm, should the latest injury complicate that fracture, it could seriously endanger or even destroy his F1 career.

Kubica's accident is sure to call into question the wisdom of F1 teams allowing their drivers to indulge in dangerous extra-curricular activities, following the examples of Juan-Pablo Montoya – whose relationship with McLaren-Mercedes never truly recovered following an early-season motocross-related shoulder injury in 2005 – and Mark Webber, whose own brace of mountain-biking falls in recent years have been well-documented.

Should Kubica be forced to miss the start of the F1 2011 World Championship campaign – as would seem all-but certain – it remains unclear as to whether he will be replaced by Bruno Senna or Romain Grosjean, although former ITV-F1 commentator James Allen muses on his internet blog that 'the sight of the Senna yellow helmet in a black-and-gold Lotus-sponsored car will be too much to resist for the marketing people...'

Get well soon Robert. You're a real racer. Get back at it.

Kubica suffers multiple fractures By Jonathan Noble and David Evans Sunday, February 6th 2011, 14:23 GMT

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/89312

Robert Kubica looks set to miss the start of the new Formula 1 season after suffering multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand in a crash on the Ronde di Andora rally on Sunday.

The Polish driver was airlifted to hospital on Sunday morning following a high-speed crash that took place 4.6 kilometres into the opening stage of the event, on a stage near the village of Testico in Italy.

Kubica is understood to have swiped a wall and hit a crash barrier in a Super 2000 Skoda Fabia on the first stage of the rally - which he was competing in shortly after completing the first week of pre-season F1 testing with Renault at Valencia.

According to sources at the event, Kubica was trapped in the car for more than one hour until specialist extraction equipment could get to the scene of the crash.

There are unconfirmed reports that Kubica's injuries were caused by the end of a crash barrier penetrating the car - which would explain why his injuries were on his right hand side rather than by the door.

After being transferred to the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure, Kubica underwent surgery on Sunday afternoon for the injuries he suffered - with doctors believed to be focusing their efforts on his injured hand.

According to a statement issued by Kubica's Renault team, he has been diagnosed with multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand. The hospital is expected to issue a statement about Kubica's condition later on Sunday, while his manager Daniel Morelli is scheduled to hold a press conference.

Kubica's injuries look almost certain to prevent him starting the season for Renault, with the first race of the campaign due to take place in Bahrain on March 13.

Renault will likely call on reserve driver Bruno Senna to fill in in the short term, but the team could opt for a more experienced driver if Kubica faces a more lengthy lay-off.

--------------------------------

Seems to me that F1 is a lot safer than rallying. I hope JV never goes rallying.

Robert was briefly woken up this morning. He was able to move his fingers, which is encouraging for the rest of his recovery process.

Great news! I wouldn't be surprised to see him driving this year. These f1 drivers are very resilient.

We have to wait and see because dexterity and fine dextirity are two different thinks. I feel sad for Kubica and hope for good recovery but I don't feel anything for Lotus Renault F1 Team. They deserves Petrov as their 1st driver and why not Ho pin Tung as their 2nd. I think China is a big market and LRFT are market driven.

Just want to say that I am very sad for the Kube, he is a good guy, he started from scratch to evolve as one of the best actual F1 driver... Hoping he won't suffer too much and will keep all his capacities...

Renault needs a driver with experience, says Lopez

http://adamcooperf1.com/2011/02/09/renault-needs-a-driver-with-experience-says-lopez/

""Inevitably the Genii boss was asked about who might drive the car in Kubica’s place, and not surprisingly he stressed that the team needed a driver with experience who can win the World Championship.""

""Bruno Senna looks set to drive at Jerez this week. Kimi Raikkonen’s name is still cropping up, but his participation in the Swedish rally this week means that his focus is elsewhere and he’s certainly not going to show up for the Jerez test. Nevertheless until he goes public with a ‘no’, he has to be on the top of the team’s list. Of those who raced in 2010 and are not contracted to a team, Nick Heidfeld remains the logical choice.""

Very interresting this paper, thank you again Cassee, if we read the commentaries below the article, we can see who is the preferred one of our "friend" Cooper, in an obvious manner...

Sadly, he might be right...

I also liked the guy who is questionning Kimi's motivation in regard of his possible return in a mid-grid team...

I think we are better to forget Kimi for this steering, Kimi was possibly right when he told that Boulier made a publicity operation when he was talking about getting Kimi in a Renault...

Kinda natural he would say that. Reality may be a lot different as time goes by, unfortunately. Again, wishing him all the best.

Woooh! What an article, it remembers me some very bad memories...

I am gonna say like Morelli said: "...he had only one litre of blood, I felt a chill in my spine."

Despite this, I am very relieved to see that he still has all his head, what a complete and intelligible speech...

I'm sure Kube will be back more determined than ever. It's probably good that JV is not being considered. He'd probably improve their car and never get credit for it and when he's going well, Kube will be back to take the credit.

I think Petrov is going to look really bad this year except for a couple of races.

Does Kubica have a contract for 2012 with Renault?

I'm thinking that if Kubica doesn't come back this year and Heidfeld does an exceptional job, perhaps they would hire Heidy instead. study

Good incentive for Kubica to get back in the car this year.

If Kubica gets out of this being able to drive and without an addiction to painkillers, it'll be impressive.

4th surgery? They may as well just sew a bunch of zippers on him, no? As you said Cassee, it will be a looooooooong road to recovery, and nothing guarantees a full recovery neither. Sad... pale
